As a basic chemical, chemical raw material calcium carbide has the following characteristics:
1. Calcium carbide is one of the chemicals with the highest energy consumption per unit of GDP. The production of a ton of calcium carbide consumes about 3200 kwh, 0.6 tons of blue carbon and 2 tons of limestone, and high energy consumption means high carbon emissions;
2. Inner Mongolia is the largest calcium carbide production base in China, with production capacity accounting for about 35% and output accounting for about 40%. Inner Mongolia is also the first region to propose strict energy consumption dual control policy this year. Therefore, calcium carbide is one of the chemicals most affected since the double carbon strategy this year.
3. Calcium carbide is highly concentrated in the provinces where it is located, and the total capacity of calcium carbide in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Ningxia accounts for 71%. Policy changes in the region are very likely to lead to the contraction of calcium carbide supply.
4. At present, except for a factory in Xinjiang with new capacity of calcium carbide, there is almost no other new capacity, and the future supply increment is limited.
Degradable plastics bring new demand, which further tightens the supply and demand of calcium carbide. From the demand side of calcium carbide, in addition to the normal growth of the demand for traditional products PVC and PVA, in recent years, with the continuous implementation of policies related to degradable plastics, the market demand for products such as PBAT is growing at an explosive rate. As one of the core raw materials of PBAT, BDO projects planned nationwide have increased significantly. 20. In 21, 22 and 23 years, China's BDO production capacity will reach 1.28 million tons, 1.90 million tons, 3.45 million tons and 5.16 million tons respectively, and about 1.12 tons of calcium carbide will be consumed per ton of BDO production, which is expected to lead to a tighter supply and demand in the calcium carbide industry
